The emergency department of a hospital in Aberdeen was evacuated and temporarily closed after a man assaulted two people.

Police and fire crews responded to the incident at the city's Royal Infirmary at about 17:30 on Friday, with two people treated at the scene.

NHS Grampian said the A&E department had since reopened, but warned it was dealing with a "large backlog of patients".

A Police Scotland spokesperson said inquiries into the incident were ongoing.

NHS Grampian chief executive, Laura Skaife-Knight, urged patients "only to attend the department in an emergency".

She said other areas of the hospital were not affected.
