A county's streets are to undergo a "blitz" clean to get rid of disposed chewing gum.

Westmorland and Furness Council has secured a £27,500 grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force, which is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The first pavements to be targeted will be at The Glebe in Bowness and Dalkeith and Cavendish streets and Lesh Lane in Barrow.

The council said once the gum had been removed, it would be up to people to keep the streets litter-free.

Cabinet member for climate, biodiversity and environmental services Giles Archibald said: "It is vital to remind the public that when it comes to litter, there is only one place it should be - in the bin."
