A man was cut out of his vehicle after his car left the road and hit the verge.

The driver is thought to have suffered a medical emergency at the wheel, on the A5 in Shropshire, resulting in serious injuries.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital by air ambulance for further treatment.

Roads were closed between the M54 J7 Cluddley, Telford, and A49 Preston Island, Shrewsbury, causing four miles of traffic but the westbound carriageway has since reopened.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene after ambulance service received a report of the incident at 06:24 BST.

The A5 westbound road has now been reopened but National Highways warn drivers of four miles of congestion which is projected to cause 60 minutes of delays.
