A hospital ward is set to close to allow "significant" repairs to take place.

A new roof and fire doors will be fitted to Ward 3, at St Luke's Hospital in Market Harborough.

The unit will close between 2 September and 1 December.

The hospital said it has stopped taking new admissions into the ward and is hoping not to need to move any patients from the site.

The building, called Ward 3, provides patients with complex rehabilitation and end-of-life care.

People are typically transferred to it from major hospitals such as the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

NHS Property Services, which owns the site, said the work is part of a £575,000 investment into improving services at the hospital.

Matron Maria Warden said: “We are very grateful to staff for their flexibility in agreeing to work differently while the repairs take place.

“Once the roof work is complete, we will have a more comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff during wet weather.”

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, which runs the site, said staff will be redeployed elsewhere during the "significant" repair works.

"The aim is that we will not be moving patients, they will be discharged to home, care homes or other destinations at the end of their expected stays with us," a spokesperson said.
