A large fire which ripped through a canal embankment and damaged a number of garden fences is believed to have been started deliberately.

West Midlands Fire Service was called to the embankment near Carisbrooke Road in Wednesbury just after 13:25 BST on Sunday.

The blaze involved a 200m (219yd) stretch of embankment and was believed to have been started deliberately, the fire service said.

Firefighters prevented it from spreading and put it out using water jets, hose reels, and fire beaters.

Four crews attended and the last firefighters left the scene by 15:40 BST on the day, the service added.
