A community organisation offering a space for people to come together and bond over woodwork has reopened after securing a new permanent premises.

The Royal Wootton Bassett (RWB) Shed, now located on Brinkworth Road, Wiltshire, aims to combat loneliness and mental health issues. Members use the workshop to construct everything from tables to bird houses.

The group was established in 2017, but was forced to close its doors after losing its former site in October 2023.

Phil Howell, the shed's treasurer, said: "I love doing DIY... this is ideal for me. It's great fun, banter and something to do."

John Loran, a committee member of RWB Shed, said many former tradesmen join the club in retirement.

"He's used to the banter that goes on on a site and all of a sudden that's absent from his life.

"What we've got here is an environment for someone who's very comfortable with that," he added.

Geoff Speak, the club's deputy chair, said they had a "really good time".

"When I retired, I promised myself I would not sit down in front of the TV at home.

"The day after I retired, I went round to the Shed and joined and I thoroughly enjoyed it," he said.

The relaunch was supported by the town council, Lydiard Tregoze Parish Council, North Wilts Woodturners and the local businesses.
