A grandmother who died after being hit by a recycling lorry was killed as the vehicle was reversing, an inquest has heard.

Daphne Stallard, 89, suffered severe crush injuries to her chest in the incident on Caroline Road, Llandudno, Conwy county, on 1 September.

An ambulance was called, but she died at the scene.

Mrs Stallard, whose family described her as a "shining light of love", was the mother of the Bishop of Llandaff, Mary Stallard.

Her husband, The Rev Charles Stallard, died some years ago, but Mrs Stallard, of St Mary's Road, Llandudno, was still active in the Holy Trinity Junior Church and other local organisations.

A Cambridge-educated scientist, Mrs Stallard taught in a number of high schools and was head of chemistry at a prestigious girls' school in Birmingham.

"A woman of faith who gave so much of her time to looking after others, she has always been an active volunteer at church," her family said.

A council employee was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but was released under investigation.

After a brief hearing in Ruthin the inquest was adjourned to a later date.
