Residents in an area of Surrey have been invited to join a community tree planting event to create new habitats.

From 10:00 GMT to 12:00 on 30 November, a variety of young trees, including crab apple, hawthorn, wild cherry, walnut, chestnut and cobnut, will be planted in Grovelands Recreation Ground in West Molesey.

Ashley Tilling, Elmbridge Borough Council's cabinet member for climate change, environmental services and sustainability, said: “By planting a diverse range of trees, we are not only enhancing biodiversity, but creating a healthier and more vibrant ecosystem for future generations to enjoy."

Tools will be available to borrow so anyone can take part in the event.

The council's portfolio holder for leisure, culture and commercial strategy Simon Waugh said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for residents to come together, enjoy the outdoors, and help us make the recreation ground a welcoming and enjoyable place to spend time outdoors."

Earlier in 2024, the council launched an action fund for projects which helped tackle the impact of climate change.

Up to £5,000 was available for each group to apply for through the new Elmbridge Community Climate Action Fund.
