Warning to train passengers ahead of rugby match

Train passengers heading to see two West Country rugby teams play in Cardiff are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys.

Bristol Bears will take on Bath Rugby at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said an extra 10,000 train seats had been provided as a result.

GWR Director of Operations Richard Rowland said the service is expected to be busy despite services being reservation only.

"We advise people to travel early and check before you travel. A queueing system will also be in place at Cardiff station after the game, ensuring people can board their train safely," he added.

Eight extra trains will depart from Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Central for Bears fans, while an extra five trains will be put on from Bath and Chippenham to Cardiff.

The trains from Bath and Chippenham will not call at Bristol Temple Meads.

GWR said reservations will be required on all trains after 08:00 BST towards Cardiff and trains will also not stop at Bristol Parkway.

Passengers are encouraged to book early and allow plenty of time for their journeys.

'Check before travelling'

GWR said it will continue to operate connecting services to Temple Meads from surrounding areas, including Taunton and Weston-super-Mare.

On return, the train operator said more than 20 trains will be provided for those travelling towards Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa and beyond, with a queuing system in place on a first-come-first served basis outside Cardiff Central after the game.

Engineering works in the Gloucester area may also impact some journeys.
