Jersey students aged 18 and over in full-time education can now access free GP surgery consultations.

The Government of Jersey said the scheme aimed to prioritise students' health and wellbeing by providing access to medical advice without worry over the cost.

It will be funded by the Health Insurance Fund, said the government.

Students at the majority of Jersey secondary schools, Highlands College and those registered with Student Finance will automatically be enrolled in the scheme, it said.

'Ease financial pressures'

Other students could apply by emailing the Health Benefits Team in the Customer and Local Services department.

Home visits, out-of-hours services and additional services such as blood tests, urine tests, pregnancy tests, referral letters and other ancillary services are outside of the scheme.

Deputy Lyndsay Feltham, Minister for Social Security, said: "Reducing GP fees is a government priority, helping to ease financial pressures on households.

"It is important that we continue to improve access to primary care services and expand this to include students."
