Police said extra officers would be patrolling the area after the body of a missing man was found in a river in Rotherham

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a missing man was found in a river.

South Yorkshire Police said they received a call on Saturday about a missing person who had not been seen since Thursday.

Inquiries led to a search of the river near Treeton Lane in Rotherham, where the man's body was found at about 19:15 BST.

Police said the arrested man, aged 42, remained in custody.

The force also said formal identification had yet to take place but the missing man's family were being supported by specialist officers.

Treeton Lane, which was initially closed, had reopened but a scene guard remained in place, police added.

Det Ch Insp Ben Wood said news of the murder arrest would "cause considerable concern among the local community" and there would be increased patrols in the area.

He added: "Our inquiries are at an early stage and I'd like to urge anyone who has any information which they feel could help our investigation to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
