Police have opened an investigation after the death of a serving prisoner at HMP Wakefield.

Officers were called to the high-security jail at 08:25 GMT on Wednesday following reports of a man being found dead in his cell, West Yorkshire Police said.

The force has not yet released the circumstances of his death and describes its investigation as being in its "early stages".

The identity of the man has not been revealed.

The incident comes less than a month after the death of the paedophile singer Ian Watkins, who was fatally stabbed at the same prison on 11 October.
