A man in his 40s has died in a suspected hit-and-run crash.

Police were called to the A19 northbound near Hylton Grange, Sunderland, over concerns for the welfare of a man at about 08:20 GMT.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road is now fully open in both directions after being closed for much of the day between Hylton Grange Interchange and Testos Roundabout.

Police believe the man may have been injured overnight in a hit-and-run involving a blue Ford Fiesta car.

Officers are appealing for the driver of the car to come forward, as well as any witnesses who travelled in the area overnight.

Another section of the road was closed for about four hours between the A183 and A1231, after a separate crash which happened at about 06:30 GMT.

Traffic was backed up for six miles, adding about an hour to normal journey times, National Highways said.

One person was taken to hospital, with another treated at the scene, the North East Ambulance Service said.
