Man who died after motorbike crash was 'kind soul'

Grandfather-of-eight Bernard Payne suffered a medical episode before falling from his motorbike

A "deeply loved" grandfather who died following a motorbike crash has been described by his family as "a kind and generous soul".

Bernard Payne suffered a medical episode before falling from his Honda motorcycle on Victoria Road in Walton-le-Dale, near Preston, at about 14:45 BST on Monday, Lancashire Police said.

The 69-year-old died in hospital the next day "surrounded by his family".

Mr Payne, who had eight grandchildren, will be "greatly missed [and] leaves behind a space no-one else can ever fill", his family said in their tribute.

They said he was "a devoted husband to his late wife Susan".

"Bernard's life was shaped by love, loyalty and family" and he was "the steady presence everyone could count on".

"His passion for motorbikes was only matched by the love he had for his family."

Police have thanked members of the public who assisted with first aid at the scene.
