The A64 has reopened eastbound after a lorry caught fire outside York.

The westbound route remains shut between the turn-offs for the A1036 (Askham) and the A1237 (Askham Bryan), National Highways confirmed.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service earlier advised nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke, while motorists were asked to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbols on road signs.

North Yorkshire Police warned that "heavy congestion" was affecting surrounding back roads.

National Highways said the eastbound carriageway reopened shortly before 17:30 BST.

Police were also at the scene of a serious collision on Braegate Lane at Colton, just off the A64.

The force said: "If you are planning to travel on the A64 or in nearby areas around Colton and Bilbrough, please consider using alternative routes.

"Delays are likely while emergency services manage both incidents."
