Nightclub boss says closure would be a 'huge loss'

The boss of a popular Bristol nightclub has said it would be a "huge loss" to the city's identity if it has to close.
After 21 years of hosting parties, the team behind Motion announced on Wednesday, external that the club may shut in July 2025 when its lease expires.
The venue has become a cultural icon within the city's nightlife scene and managing director Daniel Deeks said the team is exploring options to keep it open.
The owners of 74-78 Avon Street, where the club is located, said they "would welcome a viable bid from Motion Events".
"I think it's a huge loss to Bristol's identity," Mr Deeks told the BBC.
"We built a massive community around it.
"That's people who work there, people who come to the venue. It does a huge amount for diversity, for people's wellbeing and mental health."
He explained that they had placed a bid on the venue last year but had not been successful.
The owners of 74-78 Avon Street, said in a statement: "The property owners have been liaising with Motion Events Ltd on future plans for the site since 2019 and the club owners have been given the opportunity to put an offer forward for the building, along with other interested parties.
"Motion Events Ltd has in the past expressed an interest but, despite a number of requests over an 18-month period, have not provided a funding plan to support its viability."
In an attempt to save the venue, the team conducted an extensive pre-application process with Bristol City Council, which drew up plans to maximise the value for the landlord.
This plan focused on maintaining the ground floor for its current use, while adding affordable creative spaces above.
The feedback was positive and the council recognised the importance of retaining the building's cultural use.
As it stands, the team will have to vacate the property by 31 July 2025.
While they plan to place another bid for the site, the owners are prepared to cease trading in July.
"We are going to plan on going out in style, if that is the case," said Mr Deeks.
