Two loose horses died when they were hit by a lorry on a major trunk road.

The animals were hit by the truck on the A19 southbound west of Hartlepool at about 04:00 GMT on Friday. Shortly afterwards their bodies were hit again by a BMW.

The car driver was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees to be checked, Cleveland Police said, and the vehicle was "significantly damaged".

The road was closed for several hours between the A179 at Sheraton and the A689 at Wolviston.
