Two women, 19 and 46, die in car crash

Two women, aged 19 and 46, have died in a car crash.

Northumbria Police said it received a report of a collision on the A1068 Sheepwash Road, close to Ashington, in Northumberland, just before 09:00 BST.

Emergency services treated the two women at the scene of the crash but were unable to save them, the force said.

Sgt John Sanderson said: "We're doing everything we can to fully understand the circumstances which led to this tragic accident."

The women were in a Ford Fiesta when it crashed with a BMW X6, and the BMW driver remained at the scene, the police added.

The force said it was investigating and appealed for information.

The women's next of kin have been told and are being supported by police.
