A library in a seaside town will be closed and moved to a different location to save money.

Seaton Library will close its Queen Street site after 15 years and move to "more affordable premises" at the former Marshlands Day Centre on Harbour Road.

Devon County Council said it would be part of a hub with other public services.

The council said it needed to "divert budget in response to rising costs and demand for services that support vulnerable younger and older people".

Roger Croad, the county council's cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said the move was "a good opportunity" that would "safeguard the future of the library in Seaton".

Kate Turner, from Libraries Unlimited which delivers Devon's library service on behalf of the council, said they would be "sad to leave" the Queen Street site but understood the local authority was facing "tough financial choices".

Amrik Singh, Mayor and chairman of Seaton Town Council, said the move would "benefit residents by increasing the use of Marshlands for community-focused services".

He said: "We hope that this move, along with other improvements made by the town council to Marshlands over the last year will offer improved facilities for our community."
