A letter written by poet and librarian Philip Larkin to a colleague shortly before his death has been sold for £870.
The handwritten note was sent to Marie Cooper, his long-time colleague at the University of Hull, in July 1985 after he underwent surgery for oesophageal cancer, which revealed the disease had spread and was inoperable.
Auctioneer Paul Potter, from Potters Auction Saleroom in Messingham, North Lincolnshire, said: "It is a remarkable letter, not least because he makes no mention of the fact [he was dying].
"Either Larkin did not know at that stage or he did not wish to burden his colleague with the news."
Talking about his illness, Larkin wrote: "I can't deny it has been a big shock, physically and mentally and it'll be some time I feel before I adjust to it.
"My doctors are cheerful enough – all right for them, I think."
Larkin, who was known for his "very English, glum accuracy", also thanked Marie for a card she had sent and for her congratulations on his appointment as a Companion of Honour (CH).
Larkin, who lived in Hull for more than 30 years and worked as the head librarian at the university, added: "I would willingly swop the CH for good health – but who wouldn't?"
Larkin ended the letter by wishing Marie a long and happy retirement and expressing his gratitude for "all your help over the years".

The letter, which has an estimate of £300-£500, will be auctioned on Thursday
Mr Potter said: "You would never imagine that the writer had undergone major surgery a few weeks before, let alone all the rest.
"The handwriting is neat and legible, the tone relaxed, friendly and even funny."
He added it was not known if the pair managed to meet before her retirement, but Marie had treasured the memento from Larkin, who died on 2 December 1985, aged 63.
The letter, which was hidden away in the drawer of an old desk for 40 years, was auctioned earlier and surpassed its estimated sale value of £300-£500.
