Firefighters had to rescue a man in his 70s from sheltered accommodation.
Crews were called to the fire in a flat at Grymes Dyke Court in Rogation Close in Stanway, Colchester, at about 20:53 GMT on Sunday.
The Essex fire service said crews extinguished the fire and neighbouring residents were temporarily evacuated from their homes.
An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the blaze.
A spokesperson for Colchester Borough Homes, which runs the sheltered housing, said the safety and wellbeing of residents was "top priority".
It said: "Our thoughts are with the resident who was injured in this evening's fire at Grymes Dyke Court.
"We're thankful for the swift response from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and are working closely with emergency services to support those affected and to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident."
