A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 71-year-old found dead in his home with stab wounds.

Paramedics called Norfolk Police after finding Terry McFadyen had been fatally stabbed at Layer Close in Bowthorpe, Norwich, shortly before 04:45 GMT on Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics had been called to the house after reports that a man was experiencing breathing difficulties - and discovered Mr McFadyen with stab wounds.

Police arrested Mr Fernandes before he was taken to hospital for checks on his breathing.

Still under arrest, he was discharged from hospital on Monday morning and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, before his appearance at Norwich Magistrates' Court.

A police van is parked outside the house under investigation in Bowthorpe. The van has red and yellow high visibility chevrons and the word "police" on the back doors. The house is built of red brick and features three gables, and is bordered by other houses and garages. There is some detritus next to the van on the right side of the image, and blue and white police tape bisects the properties, creating a police cordon.Image source, Martin Giles/BBC
