A rape has been reported near a bridge over the River Thames in Surrey, police have said.

Surrey Police said the incident happened between 18:45 and 19:30 GMT on Saturday near Chertsey Bridge.

A cordon was put in place but has since been lifted.

A police spokesperson said: "We appreciate the concern that this incident will cause within the local community and we would like to reassure that we are working at pace to establish the circumstances of what has taken place."

The force said a number of inquiries have already been carried out, including obtaining CCTV footage from nearby business premises and speaking to people living nearby.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
