Elderly man hit by car seriously hurt

A man in his 90s suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car.

The pedestrian was hit at 23:15 GMT on Monday while he was in the road on High West Street, Gateshead.

Police believe a black BMW 525D, which had been travelling west on High West Street near the Regent Street junction, was involved.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene and is helping officers with their inquiries.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is asked to contact police.
