York residents could pay £3 more a year for their green bins to be collected, if an update to the garden waste subscription service is approved.

The scheme, which was introduced in August last year, gave households the opportunity to sign up for fortnightly green bin collections from March to December.

It allowed York City Council to cut costs by charging £49 for each season but it has now proposed to charge £52 in 2026.

The authority said the increase would "help ensure the sustainability of the service" and the update would be considered on Tuesday.

According to the council, 40,000 households in York are currently signed up to the subscription service.

Residents in receipt of council tax support or registered as having severe mental impairment would continue to receive a 50% discount.

Councillor Jenny Kent, executive member for environment and climate change, said: "By aligning our charges with neighbouring authorities including North Yorkshire and ensuring the service is financially sustainable, we can continue to offer residents a convenient and environmentally friendly option for kerbside collection of garden waste.

"We are now also able to offer the service to new developments and are collecting expressions of interest from anyone who was previously unable to receive the garden waste service, in order to explore the viability of further expansion.

"We remain committed to providing discounts for those who need them most."

Residents will be able to subscribe the scheme on 12 January, ahead of the service starting again in March.
