Man arrested after late-night blaze at flats

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire at a block of flats in West Sussex overnight.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the fire in The Waterfront in Goring-by-Sea at 01:48 BST on Monday.

Sussex Police said a man, 60, from Worthing, has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody.

Residents of the flats were evacuated and work is ongoing to provide temporary accommodation for those unable to return home.

Crews from Worthing, Littlehampton, East Preston, Lancing and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident.

People have been urged to avoid the area and residents have been told to keep windows and doors shut.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
