A man has suffered a fractured skull and bleed on the brain in an attack in York city centre.

North Yorkshire Police said an investigation was under way after the attack, which happened in Blake Street between 01:30 GMT and 01:50 GMT on Thursday.

The victim was repeatedly punched and knocked to the ground by another man following a short verbal altercation near the McDonald's and Londis store, the force said.

The suspect was described as white, bald, in his 40s and of large build.

Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
