Person saved from fire after e-bike 'malfunction'

A person was saved from a house fire caused by an electric bike malfunctioning.

Fire crews were called to a house in Oakthorpe Drive, Leicester, by a neighbour at 20:55 BST on Saturday.

When they arrived, a person found to be inside the house was rescued through an upstairs window, escaping without serious injuries, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A spokesperson confirmed the fire started "accidentally due to the malfunctioning of an e-bike".

The blaze caused severe damage to the ground floor of the house, with four crews called to tackle it.

Oakthorpe Drive and Wyngate Drive, in the Western Park area of the city, were closed while the fire was dealt with.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and Leicestershire Police were also called to the scene.

The fire service shared photos of the damage on social media to warn other e-bike owners to make sure they follow safety advice.
