Students at the City of Wolverhampton College will check people's vehicle tyres for free, as part of a national safety campaign.

Running until 17 October, the checks are part of UK charity TyreSafe's under pressure campaign, which encourages vehicle owners to check their tyres at least once a month.

The pupils, who are studying qualifications in light vehicle service and repair, will look at pressure, tread depth and overall condition.

They will be carried out at the college's advanced technology and automotive centre in Bilston, on its Wellington Road campus.

The college has just more than 200 learners across four qualification levels, and the programme has been running for several years.

Its workshop replicated a real garage, with lecturers creating realistic faults and scenarios on card, so the students can tackle real-world problems.

The college said a number of its learners progressed into the industry, and the course presented an opportunity for people, due to the ageing workforce and what it called a "clear skills gap".
