Christmas lights that have been described as looking like "pants" are sparking joy and conversation, according to the town council which put them up.

Fleet Town Council erected the illuminations above High Street in the Hampshire town.

The decorations have been compared to underwear on a washing line.

In a statement about the lights, the council said it was delighted they were bringing "unexpected humour" to the community.

On social media, the Fleet lights - which the council said were meant to look like lanterns - were described as resembling knickers.

Despite that, many residents said they loved the lights and how their children enjoyed them.

One person added: "You have to dry your underwear somewhere".

Rita Tong, the council's executive officer, said: "Mostly, people and organisations have made an effort to reach out and say they are appreciative that the Council puts on the lights."

'Bringing a smile'

In a statement Fleet Town Council said: "Whether you see them as pants, lanterns or simply modern lighting we're delighted to hear our streetlights are sparking joy, conversation and unexpected humour in the community.

"Our goal has always been to brighten Fleet High Street and create a welcoming environment.

"It's wonderful to know they're bringing a smile to your night and day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations.

"We value your feedback and the light-hearted moments it brings to our neighbourhood."
