One of Kent's largest community groups has been awarded its biggest ever grant to deliver a programme of activities for young people.

Medway African and Caribbean Association (Maca) is to receive £282,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The grant will "help to give young people the tools they need to explore future prospects, by building an inclusive environment where diverse groups can learn from each other", the charity said.

Carol Stewart, Maca's chairperson, said she was "delighted" the community fund could "see the vision that our charity seeks to achieve and the impact we have on the community as a whole".

The grant, which will span three years, will help the charity "establish a secure base" and "expand its services", Ms Stewart said.

Activities will include a youth music project and a video project, where young people will get the opportunity to develop media skills and create a series of short films.

Ms Stewart said: "This is indeed a landmark grant for Maca, the largest in its 40-year history.

"It will support us in realising our vision and help us to strengthen and grow."
