Train services have resumed after a car fire on a railway track.

Emergency services were called to Brockenhurst level crossing in the New Forest on Saturday at 15:50 GMT.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said the car "got stuck" on the level crossing and then caught fire. They added the driver was not injured.

According to posts on social media, the driver was an elderly man, who was able to get out of the vehicle before it was consumed by flames.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "The vehicle, which was severely affected by fire, was on the railway track and causing an obstruction.

"A crew from Brockenhurst used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish the vehicle.

"The scene was then handed over to our colleagues at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and British Transport Police to organise removal of the vehicle."

South Western Railway previously said train services running through Dorset and Hampshire could be cancelled, delayed or revised until the end of the day.

National Rail confirmed the incident had been cleared at 02:24.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
