Councillors backed calls in May for consultations on phones in classrooms to be held widely across the Highland Council area

Dozens of schools in the Highlands are working towards taking a position on whether or not to ban pupils' use of mobile phones in classrooms.

A report to a full meeting of Highland Council said 10 schools expected to make a decision during the first term of 2025-26, which started last month.

A further 23 plan to consult on phones at some point during the 2025-26 session.

The report said two other schools were already holding community consultations.

In May, councillors unanimously backed a proposal from Labour's Michael Gregson and Conservative's Helen Crawford for consultations to be held widely across the Highland Council area.

Mr Gregson and Ms Crawford said phones were having a disruptive effect on children and their education.

Highland Council has 29 secondary schools, three special schools and more than 170 primary schools.

The meeting of the full council is due to take place on Thursday.
