A waterpark which has been shut since its former owners went into administration will re-open at the end of July.

Alpamare in Scarborough has been taken over by Flamingo Land, the operators of the theme park about 30 miles inland.

The attraction will open to the public after North Yorkshire Council approved a contract to run it.

Flamingo Land owner Gordon Gibb said it was “an exciting new venture” for the company.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, North Yorkshire Council's assistant director for property services, Kerry Metcalfe, Said: “Work is ongoing at Alpamare and with Flamingo Land to get the water park ready for re-opening at the end of July.”

Shirley Smith, president of the Scarborough Hospitality Association, said she was “delighted” and believed Alpamare would have “a really positive impact on local hospitality businesses, and in turn benefit the whole community”.

The council took control of the site after the collapse of Benchmark Leisure Ltd, who struggled with rising energy costs.

Alpamare opened in North Bay in 2016 and the company was given a £9m loan from what was then Scarborough Council.
