Repairs approved for historical bridge after crash

Plans to repair a Victorian bridge that was damaged in a crash have been approved.
A parapet on the 1890-built structure, which takes Walnut Street across the River Soar in Leicester, was broken in a collision in September.
Leicester City Council submitted a planning application to repair the Grade-II listed structure, which has now been approved.
The authority said the bridge was in a safe condition but the repairs were essential.
A council spokesperson said: "These works are required to repair and replace a section of damaged bridge parapet.
"The first phase will involve the removal of the damaged parapet section.
"This will require an off-peak lane closure for up to one week.
"The second phase will see expert repairs to the parapet carried out off-site, including relacing and repairing damaged cast and wrought iron components.
"This is likely to take around one month, during which time the road will reopen as normal."
The council said a third and final phase of work would see the parapet refitted and would require a lane closure for up to one week.
Motorists would be advised of the upcoming works well before the start, the authority said.
