Fines for people who dodge fares on the West Midlands Metro could increase to 10 times their current level.

The West Midlands Combined Authority board will consider a recommendation to increase the penalty from £10 to £100, with a 50% reduction if paid within 14 days.

The organisation said the move would bring it in line with other tram operators around the country.

The increase was previously agreed in 2021 but was deferred due to factors such as Covid and the Commonwealth Games.

A report to the board, which is due to meet on Friday, said keeping the fines at the current level would not be enough of a deterrent.

At present, there is no date earmarked for when the new fine will come into effect.
