The ferry suffered its latest breakdown on Saturday

The Isle of Wight’s troubled chain ferry has resumed operations following its latest breakdown, in time for a major sailing event.

The Floating Bridge, which runs between Cowes and East Cowes, was suspended early on Saturday because of an electrical fault.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said a part needed to be made by a supplier in Plymouth before services could resume.

The ferry is due to have extended operating hours on Saturday for the Round the Island yacht race.

Crossings will begin at 04:00 BST to allow race crews to get to their vessels in time for the start of the first race at 06:00.

The council warned crossings may take longer because of heavy river traffic and high passenger demand.

Earlier this week, the council said the latest breakdown was due to a defective heat exchanger.

It added routine maintenance would also be carried out while it was out of service.

The chain ferry on the River Medina has been plagued with problems since it was first launched in 2017.

After years of issues with the vessel, Isle of Wight Council decided in March to replace the £3.5m ferry.
