Two people have been injured in a crash, with one of them having to be airlifted to hospital, police have said.

The crash on the A66 near Bowes, County Durham, left traffic on the major route across northern England "at a standstill", Durham Police said.

Following the collision at about 10:30 BST, a 15-mile stretch of the road was closed westbound between the A1(M) at Scotch Corner and the A67 at Bowes.

The road reopened at 23:39 BST, considerably longer than National Highways' original estimate of 16:00.
