Warning as vans targeted in spate of tool thefts
- Published
Tens of thousands of pounds of power tools and other equipment have been stolen from vans across Wiltshire.
The majority of the break-ins have been in Salisbury, but similar incidents have been reported in a number of places including Amesbury, Warminster and Swindon.
Wiltshire Police believe the same group is committing the crimes and have been liaising with neighbouring forces who have also seen cases.
County Neighbourhoods Ch Insp James Brain acknowledged the crimes were causing "a significant amount of distress" to those affected.
“Each theft like this can have a severe impact upon the victim’s livelihood and business given the nature of the offence and what is being stolen."
The force said it had granted dedicated resources towards catching the criminals responsible.
Wiltshire Police have evidence to suggest the vans are broken into between about 22.30 and 02:00, with the offenders targeting multiple vehicles in the same night.
“I would urge anyone who notices someone acting suspiciously around any vehicles, potentially scouting for target vehicles, or any suspicious vehicles to report it by calling 101 or online." Insp Brain said.
'Easy target'
He urged van owners to take precautions: “While we continue with our investigation, please ensure that you are protecting your van adequately.
"Thieves know that many van owners transport and store expensive tools inside - don’t make your van an easy target.”
Wiltshire Police are asking people to:
Park your van in a secure, well-lit location
Do not leave tools on show if leaving a van unattended and consider using "there are no tools left in this vehicle" signs
Always store your tools elsewhere at night
Mark property – it is possible to mark a van and all tools with paint, permanent markers or ultraviolet pens. Similarly, take photos and keep a note of any serial numbers to prove ownership
If possible, reverse your van so the side and back doors cannot be accessed
To prevent the van itself being stolen, consider visible deterrents like a steering lock
