A woman has died after a motorway crash which left nine others injured.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the major crash on the M4 between junctions 16 and 17 shortly before 23:30 BST on Sunday.

A woman in her 40s died at the scene, while another woman in her 50s sustained serious injuries.

Five more people in the same car - a seven-seater Toyota Corolla - suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Three people travelling in the second car, a VW Tiguan, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The M4 westbound remains closed between Swindon and Chippenham for investigation work by Wiltshire Police's serious collision team.

The road is likely to remain shut for the rest of the day.

"We appreciate this will cause disruption for a large number of people and thank you for your patience," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.

Police added that they had received reports that a white vehicle may have been involved and left the scene.

Any witnesses have been urged to come forward to police, as well as those with any relevant dashcam footage of the incident.
