A new centre providing affordable recycled care and mobility equipment has opened in Jersey.

The Equipment Hub at La Collette Recycling Centre has been set up by disability charity Enable Jersey to give islanders who needed to use mobility aids a cheaper option, rather than facing the upfront cost of buying new accessibility equipment, bosses said.

It was selling second-hand items including mobility scooters, wheelchairs, recliner chairs and walkers which had been serviced, they added.

Enable Jersey's CEO Sean Pontin said the launch of the hub was "a truly fantastic community project".

The charity said the lack of available equipment was a growing problem in the community, which could create barriers for individuals seeking to maintain independence or return home after a hospital stay.

Mr Pontin said: "We hear from people all the time: 'My husband is ready for discharge, there's not enough beds in the hospital.'

"We can help with that conundrum because we are offering another choice.

"You can still buy or rent a piece of equipment, but for people that are happy for something used but in pretty good or new condition, we're now offering them another opportunity.

"It's good news for us, good news for government departments, and hopefully helps the hospital."

Plans to extend

Enable Jersey said it had seen a large increase in people needing accessible equipment and had taken more than 300 requests in 2025 already.

It said the hub was the result of two years of collaboration and development and there were plans for it to expand in the next year to keep up with demand.

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey cut the ribbon to formally open the Equipment Hub, which will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays between 10:00 BST and 16:00 BST.
