Arson investigation under way after play park fire

A fire service said it believed the blaze was started deliberately

An arson investigation is under way after a fire at a new children's play area.

Firefighters found a wooden structure ablaze at Pulley Park in King's Hedges, Cambridge at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed no-one was hurt and said CCTV footage would be checked.

A local councillor said tens of thousands of pounds had been spent improving the play area and described what happened as "shocking".

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spent about two hours dealing with the incident.

"Firefighters arrived to find a fire involving a wooden structure in the Pulley play area," the service said in a statement.

"Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using a hose reel.

"The cause of the fire was deliberate."

Councillor Mohamed Delowar Hossain described the fire as "shocking"

Conservative councillor Mohamed Delowar Hossain said Cambridge City Council was trying to find out whether damaged equipment could be repaired.

"It is anti-social behaviour," he said.

"We have spent £160,000 on improving this park. This is really shocking."

Cambridgeshire Police said: "We were called by the fire service at about 7pm on Sunday, with reports of play equipment on fire at Pulley Park, King's Hedges.

"No injuries were sustained. An investigation has been launched."
