Arrest after car set alight as pair slept inside

A man has been arrested after a car with a man and a woman sleeping inside on a residential road was set on fire.

The car on Cordale Road, Basingstoke, was found alight on Thursday at about 05:30 GMT.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said firefighters quickly put the fire out and the pair were not injured.

The force said a 61-year-old man, from the town, had been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and assault by beating of an emergency worker.

The force said the man remained in custody and investigations were ongoing.

Witnesses and anyone with CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage are being urged to come forward to police.
