Bridge repairs expected to cause delays

The closure of the westbound bridge on the A47 over the River Great Ouse begins at 20:00 GMT on Saturday

Essential repairs to a key road bridge that takes traffic out of a county are expected to cause delays this weekend.

The westbound carriageway of the A47 will be closed between the Hardwick Roundabout and Pullover Roundabout in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

The closure of the bridge, which takes traffic over the River Great Ouse, runs from 20:00 GMT on Saturday to 05:00 on Monday.

A 36-mile diversion will take drivers travelling westbound down through Downham Market and Wisbech before they rejoin the A47.

The diversion adds 36 miles to journeys

Steven Thulborn, head of planning and development for National Highways, said: "Our thanks go to road users and residents for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential bridge repairs.

"We are carrying out most of the work overnight to keep any disruption to a minimum.

"During the works we would advise drivers to allow more time to complete their journey, and to check their route before travelling."

Drivers travelling east will not be affected by the closure.
