The redevelopment of a riverside bar has been approved by planners.

By The River Brew Co, which was located underneath the Tyne Bridge in Gateshead, shut in September 2024.

Gateshead Council has now approved plans for a revamp of the former street food site and bar which will involve the replacement of shipping containers with permanent structures.

The company said: "To be able to create something with true legacy is a privilege and we look forward to moving forward with the project."

The site will also include a bike shop and the conversion of an existing shipping container on the site into a seasonal outdoor bar directly beneath the Tyne Bridge.

A date for the reopening of the site has not been confirmed.

The report on the scheme put forward to the council's planning committee suggested the new bar would "enhance the existing cultural and commercial offer" of the location and provide opportunities for "performance, events and external exhibitions" at the site.
