A man suffered multiple broken bones after he was struck over the head in an assault, police said.

Officers believed the victim, in his 30s, was attacked by three men who used a cosh to beat him with.

Essex Police said the incident happened in Luncies Road, Basildon, shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The man's injuries were not life-threatening but he sustained broken bones around his cheeks, the force added.

"The man had been standing in Luncies Road when a car pulled up and three men – two of which are described as wearing balaclavas and the other as having his hood up – got out and attacked him," a police spokesperson said.

Det Sgt Sandy Kelleher said officers were investigating if the incident was linked to an assault at The Winged Horse pub, 20 minutes earlier.

"I know this will be concern our community but this type of incident is rare," the officer added.
