Hundreds of homes planned for outskirts of village

A plan for 750 homes and a first school on the outskirts of a village near Wolverhampton has been submitted.

The development, to the east of Bilbrook in Staffordshire, on land south of Pendeford Mill Lane, would provide 40% affordable housing and specialist accommodation for older residents.

A planning statement on behalf of Bloor Homes Ltd said it aimed to create an "attractive, sustainable" neighbourhood, closely connected to the village.

Eight residents have so far objected to the "inappropriate plans", with one concerned it would "destroy" the village's "character and wellbeing".

In total, 825 units could be developed, with the affordable housing provision split between 50% social rented, 25% shared ownership, and 25% first homes.

The planning statement, submitted to South Staffordshire Council, said the site would be "well integrated into its surroundings" and provide new retail space.

It continued: "The proposed development is anticipated to cause some landscape impact and associated harm which is limited to a small area and able to be reduced by the implementation of proposed mitigation measures.

"The application proposals constitute sustainable development and would contribute towards meeting the identified local housing needs of the district."

Objecting to the plans, Victoria Harris commented: "The size... will destroy the character and wellbeing of the village. Additional pressures on local GPs, shops, car parks, travel without any additional investment."

Maria Affron added the plan would destroy wildlife and habitats: "I believe this is further inappropriate over development of green belt land in an area that does not have the infrastructure to cope."

A date to determine the application has not yet been set.
