Priory Court was evacuated in June after a water leak

Nearly all the tenants of a tower block affected by a water leak have been permanently rehomed, a council has said.

Residents were evacuated from Priory Court in Gateshead on 6 June, after an internal flood damaged the electrical system.

Some of the Hopper Street tenants went to stay with family members, while others were offered accommodation in nearby hotels.

Gateshead Council said 33 households out of 36 were about to or already had moved into a new home and it was working with the remaining tenants to solve any issues.

Councillor Chris Buckley, cabinet member for housing, said: "This has been a deeply regrettable situation and I want to thank the tenants of Priory Court for their understanding and patience during what has undoubtedly been a very difficult time."

He added the "wellbeing of residents" remained the "top priority".
