Villages to welcome Tour de Britain cycle race

A number of villages in North Yorkshire have been confirmed as part of the route of the Tour of Britain cycle race.
The Darlington to Redcar leg of the event in September will pass through scenic areas of the North York Moors National Park.
The route announcement came after the news that a Sheffield to Barnsley stage would also feature in the 18-team race.
North Yorkshire Council’s leader, Carl Les, said that hosting the event was a “fantastic opportunity to draw cycling enthusiasts to the area”.
He said: “Our county is the perfect destination for hosting these races, not only offering picturesque towns, coastal villages and stunning landscapes but also challenging and exhilarating climbs.
“These events also bring with them a significant economic boost for the area - they are unmatched in their ability to attract new visitors to destinations, who fill hotel rooms, dine locally and shop in our towns."
The moors locations that the riders will pass through include Lealholm, Ingleby Greenhow, Danby, Aislaby and Littlebeck.
Mr Les added: “With the Long Course Weekend Yorkshire in Masham also taking place in September, it’s set to be an exciting month showcasing a warm North Yorkshire welcome to athletes and spectators alike.”
The Darlington to Redcar leg begins on 4 September and will be part of six days of racing.
The Sheffield to Barnsley stage includes Loxley, Oughtibridge, Chapeltown, Wath upon Dearne, Swinton, Maltby, Tickhill, Conisbrough, Penistone and Worsbrough Common. It is the first time the Tour of Britain has visited Barnsley.
