Car submerged in River Thames halts boat traffic

Boat traffic had to be halted on a stretch of the River Thames after a car was found submerged in the river.

Police and firefighters were called to Stovell Road in Windsor on Monday shortly before 15:15 BST.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews arrived to find a vehicle was "completely submerged" in the river, behind the Windsor Leisure Centre.

Thames Valley Police said it is not thought anyone was inside the car and work was underway to remove it from the river.

The submerged car, at Romney reach under Windsor Relief Road Bridge, has been marked with a yellow marker buoy.

The Environment Agency, external has urged water traffic to navigate the stretch of river with caution.

Police are urging people to avoid the area if possible while the car is recovered.

How the car ended up in the River Thames is not yet known.
